East Cape Natural History Surf Trip

Explore Baja Sur

Our 7 day surf, hiking, and island trips will be taking place on Baja California Sur’s renown East Cape where you’ll fly into San Jose del Cabo with your boards, and from there we’ll cover the rest. The goal of these trips isn’t just to find waves, but to learn about the Cape Region as a whole, from it’s ecology, geography, to it’s indigenous heritage. Here we utilize a large air conditioned beachfront surf compound which acts as our basecamp in order to facilitate quick runs up and down the coastline as we surf a variety of different waves, and also provides us with relatively quick access (1.5 hrs) to the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve, along with Cabo Pulmo National Park (1hr) and Isla Cerralvo (2hrs). The Sierra de la Laguna granitic mountain range runs from north to south with a maximum elevation of 6,895ft which provides dramatic relief compared to the lowland thornscrub forests. Due to the striking elevation of this range, it catches all of the monsoonal summer moisture resulting in year round water throughout many of the ranges vertical arroyos. Here you will find several stunning freshwater oases with deep swimming holes as you begin your ascent of the arroyos. As with any surf trip, it’s nice to have options for days between swells, or if you’re just wanting to explore more of what the region has to offer. These one to two hour hikes at mountain oases re a great way to spend some time away from the surf. When we’re scouring the coastline looking for waves we’ll have a handful of different breaks to choose from including point breaks, reef breaks, and sand/reef combo’s, and if there’s lulls between swells we have plans to go look for marine life at Cabo Pulmo and Isla Cerralvo.
