One of the reasons the Tres Virgenes volcanic complex is the crowned jewel of central Baja (in my humble opinion) is the fact that it makes for a great base camp and jumping off point for exploring the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve. Positioned on the volcanic spine of the sierra, you’re a stones throw from the Sea of Cortez, and 2.5 hrs from from the Pacific Ocean. Still trying to put the pieces together after a journey into the volcanic veins of this landscape. Everything I thought I knew about this region became uplifted and inverted, not unlike the layered volcanic syncline that paints the canyon walls in ochres, reds, and pinks. This is as much a vertical as it is a horizontal landscape, it’s moods changing with the passing of the sun. Shadows grow and stretch across the desert plain as the sun dips to the west. A landscape that was motionless under oppressive heat begins to quiver as andesite lava flows slowly move with the dance of light. Time often feels as though we’re trying to hold heaps of sand in the palm of our hands, yet here that motion seems to halt. For those of you who are Tolkien fans, the best way I can describe this region is its where Gandalf goes to fight the Balrog and one week feels like an eternity. Llano de Los Datilillos, an expanse of mesquite and palo blanco bosque which slowly rolls down from the eastern escarpment of the Volcan Tres Virgenes. On the eve of the Baja 1000, tucked far away from the rumble of machines, we sit in the shadow of the mountain. Here lies the kingdom of Baja California’s big three terrestrial mammalian species, the bighorn sheep, mountain lion, and the peninsular mule deer. Volcanic regions not only remind me of the geologic origins of our planet, but also of our own. Of our ancestral wayfinding through deserts, savanna’s, and glaciated plateau’s, spanning latitudes and longitudes to the far flung corners of the globe.
